Ancaster Dentistry – Childs First Visit

ancaster dentistry childs dental visitAncaster Dentistry – Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Good dental habits start early. And if you are wondering how early, here is the answer. According to the Canadian Dental Association, a child’s first dental visit should be within 6 months of the eruption of first tooth or by the child’s first birthday, whichever is earlier.

Tooth eruption is one of those developmental milestones which indicate the transition of food habits of the infant. You may be excited to try new baby foods but at the same time, it’s your responsibility to also monitor your infant’s oral health and practice proper oral hygiene to prevent future problems.

So, whether your oral hygiene practices are sufficient for your little one or not, get to know Golf Links Dental in Ancaster, where Dr.Manjula Duhan and her team will answer all your queries and provide the best dental recommendations or treatment for your child if need be.

First Dental Visit

Generally, the first dental visit involves less of a treatment and more of an opportunity for your child to experience what a dental visit looks like. Early age dental visits, apart from providing prophylactic care for your infant’s teeth, help alleviate the fear of a dental visit by familiarising the child with the dentist and making them realize that dental visits are not synonymous with pain and in fact, they are meant to prevent it from happening in the first place. We will go over your dental cleaning you do at home to confirm it is working and identify any problems that could be addressed right away.

On your child’s first dental visit, Dr. Manjula Duhan, at Golf Links Dental, examines the teeth and gums of your baby and may even take radiographs. You may be asked to lie in the dental chair holding your baby or if your baby is comfortable with it, you may be asked to wait in the reception during the dental check-up.

Oral Hygiene Methods for your Child

Your dentist will discuss the oral hygiene methods you currently employ and how to improve it. You may want to discuss teething problems with your dentist and how to overcome them. Based on the condition of your child’s oral health, your dentist will advise you on fluoride treatments and the proper time to start them.

Nutrition for your Child

Nutrition of your child is another important aspect that you should consider. Talk to us about any oral habits that your child may be having such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing since it may cause problems later if not stopped at the right time.

As your child continues to grow permanent molars, Dr. Duhan may suggest sealing them to protect them from cavities. A dental sealant is a kind of plastic that is put on the chewing surface of the molars and seals the tooth to make it less likely to trap food and germs.

It is advisable to visit your dentist every 6 months for a dental checkup at any age. With kids, it helps to develop trust and prevent any big dental issues.

Dr. Manjula Duhan is a mother of two children and is very calming in her chair side manner. She strives to look after each patient as if she was for her own family.
